- Wednesday & Friday Nights 6pm
A letter from Coach Jeff - Owner of Bellingham BJJ,
For the first time, we’ll be offering our popular Intro to BJJ series two days a week at Pure Fitness in January 2023. We’re grateful to Pure Fitness folks for this interest in our four-week Intro to BJJ class! We think this class is a terrific entry point to this martial art, and we’re excited to see you there.
This document should contain everything you need to know about the class. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS NOT COVERED HERE: You can e-mail me, Jeff Shaw, at firstname.lastname@example.org. You're always welcome to e-mail me with questions or just to say hello. Once you’re in the academy, of course, you can also ask any questions you might have.
The classes will be Wednesday and Friday nights at 6 p.m.
Over the years we've been fortunate to learn from some incredible people. We’re excited to share that with you! Here are some of the things people are saying about us. As people with a real passion for jiu-jitsu, we've put a lot of thought into the best way to introduce new people to the art. We’ve developed a class series that covers a lot of bases. You can find the core curriculum for the Foundations class here. (There may be small changes to this depending on the class composition, experience level, background & interest).
Now, let's tell you all you need to know about the class!
WHEN AND WHERE DOES CLASS HAPPEN?: Classes take place at Pure Fitness Martial Arts. The first class begins on WEDNESDAY, Jan. 11, and runs on Wednesdays and Fridays, two classes per week from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. The final class in the Intro series will be Friday, Feb. 3.
WHAT WILL I RECEIVE?: The whole Intro to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is $250 for the whole four weeks, and your first jiu-jitsu gi is included in the price. Intro classes are size-limited so we can provide a lot of personalized attention focused on your interests. You'll also have access to all of the written class notes and video instruction to help you review techniques and clarify anything you miss.
In addition to learning resources and the gi (which retails at $155), you’ll also get free access to the academy’s online resources.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?: Besides the gi, which we’ll supply for you, you’ll want to wear athletic shorts (like bike shorts, fight shorts, or any secure shorts or leggings without zippers and pockets) underneath the gi. Some people wear a shirt or rash guard under the gi. Many do not. Please trim your nails short and be clean (i.e. have showered) before class— we are in close contact with one another and hygiene is a priority for everyone at BBJJ.
You’ll want to wash the gi after every class, and hang it up or tumble it dry on low so it doesn’t shrink too much.
AFTER CLASS STARTS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
As you progress through the class, you can check out the "study guide" supplementary resources page we've prepared for you. We encourage you to take notes during classes -- even pictures and video if you want. But we also want you to be able to have reminders available online for what we've trained.
Here's a basic explanation of what a typical BJJ class will look like. Here is the school's values statement. Here are some school policies. We also have a resource for new people called the White Belt BJJ Starter Kit. It's a series of blog posts about common topics and questions, including basic BJJ academy etiquette. Check it out; we're adding to it all the time!
Please note: We're requiring all students in this Intro class to be vaccinated against COVID-19. We're doing this to minimize risks to our community's health and to keep our place a safe, healthy place to train. If you aren't vaccinated yet, here is a way to find a list of FREE vaccination clinics around the county. It takes 20 minutes, doesn't require registration, and again, is free.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INTRO SERIES ENDS? It depends! If there is enough student interest, we will continue to hold twice-weekly classes at Pure Fitness. That’s what we’re hoping for, for sure.
No matter what, after the Intro to BJJ Class ends, all students in this class will also have the opportunity to sign up for Bellingham BJJ with no fees. Check out the full schedule here. With no contracts or fees or commitments beyond the 4 weeks, you can come out and train -- and see why so many people who try BJJ end up loving it. All Pure Fitness members who sign up at Bellingham BJJ will get a discounted Bellingham BJJ membership, which is $99 per month for unlimited training.
Our main academy is at Bellingham BJJ, 205 W. Holly St., right downtown. We’re a block away from a parking garage (free after 5 p.m. and on weekends), a block from a bus stop, and we have bike racks inside the building for cyclists. You can learn more about us at BellinghamBJJ.com.
Again, thank you so much for your interest! We’re looking forward to meeting and training with you.
